For many who live in cold country, growing herbs outdoors is a difficult act. But it’s possible.
Most of the popular culinary herbs — so-called Mediterranean herbs — need some protection against the cold. We create a 12′ x 14′ PVC greenhouse that not only creates a warmer climate for our tender herbs, but also extends the growing season for them.
Start your seeds indoors to give them a head start, or buy plants and keep them warm and sheltered until you’re ready to transplant outdoors.
Basil is great for attracting bees, and chives, parsley, chervil, tarragon, thyme, lemon balm, oregano, rosemary, and sage are also good choices for the culinary kitchen.
For flowering herbs we suggest borage which has a cucumber flavor, and calendula, and nasturtium.
We like a lemon scent in our herb garden and lemon savory fits the bill. It has a nice lemon-pepper flavor and grows like a weed. You might also consider a lemon scented geranium which has a good lemon flavor and is easy to grow from cuttings. And don’t forget lemon verbena for a heavy lemon flavor.
We consider companion plants to be the life blood of our garden, and with good reason. Some plants do well together, and some don’t, and you don’t want to get it wrong otherwise your garden will never live up to its potential. For example, plant cucumbers with beans, chives, corn, artichoke, peas, radish, sunflower and tomato — not with potatoes or most aromatic herbs.
Tomatoes are a favorite in most gardens and go well with asparagus, basil, bergamot, borage, carrots, celery, chives, cucumber, garlic, marjoram, onion, parsnip, peas, stinging nettle, rose, sage, or turnip. Do not plant tomatoes with broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, corn, dill, fennel, kohlrabi, potato, or rosemary.
If you plan on planting peppers — and this includes chilies — plant them with basil, carrot, marjoram, okra, parsnip, and tomatoes. Do not plant with fennel, kohlrabi, or onion. And remember – on the subject of onions and for the purposes of companion planting – the term onion includes any members of the onion family such as garlic, chives, and leeks.
Go through our list and select a few plants for your short list. Pay attention to the amount of sun or shade you get in your garden as well as the average summer temperature in your part of the world. Based on your findings, select the herbs that are most compatible with your local conditions – and with each other — give them protection, and we feel sure you will achieve great success in your cold country garden.
