There are many different types of herb garden plants and each herb has its own unique benefit. If you look at them as a whole herb plants supply a wide range of benefits but to make things easy they are grouped into categories for what they are used for. For example you have the culinary herbs which have many different uses in food or cooking. Some culinary herbs have very strong flavor so are used in small quantities such as herbs like basil, sage, savory, thyme and chives. There are herbs that garnish your dishes, parsley usually comes to mind. By the way parsley is edible meaning you can eat parsley it is actually part of the carrot family. In fact parsley was originally placed in a dish at the table and was used as a breath freshener rather then the plate decoration it is used for today. So after a meal help yourself to the parsley if you like.

Another category is the aromatic herbs which have pleasant smelling flowers or foliage. These herbs can be used in linens or clothing to give them a nice scent. Some herbs are dried and used as potpourri to scent the air. Lavender and lemon verbena are good for this. Oils from some aromatic herbs, like rosemary and mint are used to make perfume.

The ornamental herbs are grown and used for their beauty brightly colored flowers. Chicory has beautiful blue flowers and so does Borage. Valerian is sweet smelling and has deep red colored flowers.

Another important category are the medicinal herbs which have been used for hundreds of years mostly in the East and are still very widely used to this day as a natural way to heal the body. In the West herbal healing is well recognized mostly in Latin America. In the US medicinal herbs unfortunately get a bad rap because herbal use conflicts with the medical model and the giant multibillion dollar profit making pharmaceutical industry. Enough said on that point but you get the idea.

Some herbs have a number of purposes. The valerian herb mentioned above for its beauty also is used for medicinal purposes. Its roots are used as a sedative. Mint can be used for adding a mint flavor to cooking or for mint tea and while mint will take over a garden it is effective for protecting a garden against pests.

Naturally herb use is a big subject, way to big to put it all in one article so these are only a few of the purposes for herb garden plants.

Chives, parsley, tarragon and chervil are some examples of herbs that are commonly used for salads, fish and chicken dishes or to a cooked egg by sprinkling those over its top. This may result to a more delicious menu.

The following are the list of fascinating herbs which are mostly used for food seasoning that you can grow in your home herb garden:

Chives, which belong to the onion family, are very simple and easy to grow. You can choose either ordinary chives or garlic chives. You can use them as garnish to your food by chopping their stems. In addition, you can use their pink flowers in your favorite salads.

Parsley is one of the commonly grown herbs in every home herb garden. It is being said that parsley can be grown easily either from seeds or from seedlings. The two types of this, namely: flat-leafed and curly, are great sources of vitamins and minerals. They can be used fresh. Tarragon, which has more sophisticated and subtle flavor than some herbs, is said to be the basic ingredient in any French cuisine. There is French tarragon which is better type compared to Russian tarragon. Aside from its usage as garnish and for cooking, it is also known for giving flavor to white vinegar.

There is a very easy way to start earning money out of your herb garden once you have gained some experience in the herb garden delights of successfully producing your own stock of plants. I have already published articles on how to propagate herbs from seeds and cuttings which you could refer to.

What type of herbs do you grow? The two most popular categories of course are culinary herbs and medicinal herbs. There are purely decorative herbs and even herbs suitable for creating bonsai. So if you have concentrated purely on one category why not now start to put your experience to good use and branch out to the other areas.

O.k. let me stop being coy and admit that the purpose of publishing these articles is to promote my website where I am offering a free mini-course in herb gardening, and an in depth advice ebook. I have decided to offer as a bonus to my ebook another ebook covering in great detail this subject of making money from herb garden plants.

But why wait for that, here is a simple guide just to whet your appetite for a secondary income, or even a full time business venture. First, think of yourself as a customer and remember what herbs you most wanted when you were beginning. Perhaps there was an herb you just could not find at first. If so, imagine if someone else is also searching for it and would love to stumble upon your small business!

Were you keen to grow basil for culinary purposes or maybe tarragon because you thought of creating your own salad dressings? If you grow medicinal herbs, think which ones people would be most likely to buy.

There are many people that grow an aloe vera plant, not because they are herbalists or have any other interest in herb gardening. No, they grow aloe vera in case someone sustains a burn. The sap, from a cut branch of the plant, applied to the burn soothes and aids rapid healing. Believe me, it works! How many women do you know that have a feverfew plant just so they can chew a leaf when a migraine threatens?

How to Market Yourself

Probably the thought of marketing yourself conjures up all sorts of horrors. At first, it would seem like an insurmountable problem; but really it is quite simple. You would first use word of mouth by telling all of your friends and family; just let them know you have started this small business. You do not have to ask them to buy your products; but they will spread the word and it will travel from there.

Second, you could display flyers in local grocery stores who are happy to give display space for this. It is quick and cheap to advertise here. Also you could place a classified advertisement in your local newspaper. These papers are popular and cost very little to advertise in.

Get more adventurous and set up a plants and seedlings stall at your local flea market or boot sale. These are perfect venues because there are always people ready to spend a couple of dollars on something, and your produce could be that spur of the moment purchase. Do not be shy about having some business cards available and make sure everyone who stops to talk to you at your stall receives one.

How to Start Creating Stock

You need to start growing the herbs that you intend to sell. Get them planted in the late winter or early spring. Concentrate on a few herbs to start with and make sure they are in perfect health. After all, you want to give your customers top quality specimens so that they come back next season for more plants; and other items that you have now expanded into; such as packets of seeds, dried herbs, advice leaflets, culinary sauces and seasonings —.

I provided, in a recent previous article, instruction on preparing a tincture from your herb garden plants, so if you have carried out those instructions you are ready to learn how you can make your own throat sprays, gargles, mouthwashes and inhalants which can all be made from your tinctures. What better herb garden delight is there than that.

The tincture is the result of extracting the oils – the chemical components of each herb, made by soaking the herb in a mixture of water and alcohol. Because the alcohol acts as a preservative, the tincture is wholesome and usable for at least two years if stored in a cool dark place.

Do not forget that when the tincture is to be used for children or if you prefer not to drink alcohol yourself, heat the potion to nearly boiling so that the alcohol will evaporate away. This will of course leave a higher concentrate of the medicinal content in the potion.

Herbs can be used in many different ways to treat anything from acne to worms but for the purpose of this article we shall concentrate on remedies for treating various respiratory, nose and throat infections by using tinctures of Echinacea, chamomile, cinnamon, golden seal, and hyssop. These can then be used variously as teas, compresses, inhalants, gargles, or like any medicine; a teaspoonful at a time.

To combat a heavy cold or influenza, make up a cup of tea with two teaspoons of Echinacea in a cup of hot water (to remove the alcohol use near boiling water and allow to cool down to drinkable temperature). This may be sweetened with a spoonful of honey. Instead of two spoons of Echinacea use one plus a spoonful of chamomile or even cinnamon as alternative concoctions and see which is most comforting.

For treating sinus problems, catarrh, excess mucus; use teas made individually, or as mixtures, of golden seal, hyssop and cinnamon. Again a spoonful of honey may help the medicine go down. Any of these tinctures (try any combination to find which suits you best ) put into a small bowl filled with boiling water will make a pleasant inhalant. Just cover your head over the bowl with a large towel and breathe in the fumes.

A sore throat can be treated by gargling with a strong tea made from any single one, or mixtures, of these herb tinctures. Just make up a small glassful with water as hot as you can comfortably use and gargle immediately. Again, to remove the alcohol use near boiling water and allow to cool down to a usable temperature. A throat spray can be prepared in the same way. For a freshening mouthwash, make up a small amount of strong just warmed tincture and water mix in a small glass. Thoroughly rinse around your mouth and spit out until all used. Do this three or four times a day while symptoms persist.

Another way to ease a sore throat or blocked nose is by making a hot compress. Use a clean flannel or small towel soaked in and rung out from a strong mixture of herbal tinctures and water as hot as you can bear. Put on your chest, or round your neck, or even wrapped around your face. Feel the heat and breathe the fumes for immediate comfort.

At the end of a busy day put several spoonfuls of a tincture into a hot footbath. This will comfort and refresh your feet, and inhaling the fumes will soothe and relax you helping you to fall into bed for a deep rejuvenating sleep.

Need some gardening fun in your life? Consider fresh herb gardening. One of the simplest (and easiest) forms of gardening is growing herbs. If you consider yourself a gardening beginner you can quickly discover how to easy growing fresh herbs really is.

Whether you choose to grow herbs indoors or outdoors, it is nice to have a choice which is unlike other kinds of gardening. Having your plants indoors can be soothing and relaxing. Immersing yourself in caring for your herbs takes your mind a thousand miles from the daily grind. Preparing dinner is much more exciting when you can harvest your own fresh herbs for immediate use.

Enjoying success with an herb garden takes a small amount of planning. You should make an educated decision regarding the types of herbs you want to grow. Aromatic herbs, medicinal herbs, and culinary herbs are the three main categories of herbs for home gardens.

Many herbs are useful for more than one purpose. Most all are familiar with mint. It is a culinary herb used in many cuisines that is also a medicinal herb. It is considered a useful digestive aid. When you pick mint from your garden the air is filled with its lovely fragrance, one more reason to include mint in your garden.

Your garden planning will serve you well now as your herb choices impact whether you have an indoor garden or one outdoors. While some herbs thrive indoors, others need all the elements available outdoors. Know thy herbs.

Rosemary is an herb that responds well in an outdoor garden because it needs plenty of room to grow. On the other hand, because this herb can overtake your garden, many gardeners will only grow rosemary indoors or in a container to keep it from spreading. Many people use rose hips as a medicinal herb but it can only grow outdoors.

Fresh herb gardening requires attention to the soil conditions. Because herbs tend not to do well in a soil that retains water or has a high nutrient content, avoid using pure potting soil. This is a common mistake among beginning herb gardener mistake.

The best soil mixture for herbs is made by combining potting soil, common dirt, and clean sand. The dirt will reduce the nutrient content while the sand allows excessive water to drain from the soil. Herbs prefer a slightly acidic soil so mix in 1 tablespoon of lime with each container, or for each square foot of garden if planting outdoors.

A common mistake when direct planting seeds or cuttings is to cover too deeply. When this is done the tender plant cannot germinate or sprout correctly and your fresh herb garden will die off before it starts. Usually, a depth of about two inches is best, making sure the soil is not overly compacted, but slightly loose.

Sarah Phillips is an herb gardening enthusiast, and enjoys helping others get started in this wonderful hobby.

You can be enjoying your own herbs in as little as 7 days.

Garlic is a wonderful healing herb and, unlike many of the other herbs, it tastes great and can be incorporated into a variety of meals. Garlic has been used for over 5000 years as a healing herb and has strong antibacterial, and antiviral properties. But it’s health benefits extend well beyond it’s infection fighting properties. It is also reputed to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure as well as help protect against heart disease and stroke.

And the benefits of garlic don’t stop there. A recent study has shown that taking a garlic supplement once a day can reduce the risk of getting a cold by 50% and help you gain a speedy recovery if you do happen to catch one. In fact, I tried this out recently when I felt a sore throat coming on – I toasted a piece of bread and added some raw crushed garlic to it. It was a bit pungent but I woke up the next day good as new! Aside from colds, garlic has historically been used as a remedy for infections, athletes foot, worms, respiratory ailments, some cancers of the stomach, colic, ear aches, bladder problems and high blood pressure.

Garlic is jut plain good for you too! it is loaded with vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, B and C, selenium, potassium, calcium, zinc and magnesium. But in order to reap the benefits, you must prepare it in a certain way. Researcher say it is the allicin that is released when garlic is crushed. If you are trying to serve yourself a garlic herbal remedy by adding garlic to your foods then make sure you crush it a bit ahead of time and don’t add until the final 5 minutes of cooking. This will give the allicin enough time to develop and will insure you don’t cook all the garlic health out of it.

Cooked garlic will not have as much benefit as raw and whole garlic cloves have little benefit at all. Another way to incorporate garlic into your meals without cooking is to make a garlic bread where you crush the gloves into a paste and toast bread – butter the toasted bread and spread the garlic on it – Yum!

Garlic can have an affect on blood clotting, so don’t start taking supplements unless you discuss it with your physician first especially if you are on blood thinning medication or due to have surgery in the near future.

Glechoma hederacea (Labiatae)

Appearance

Ground Ivy has small lilac/pink flowers with very tiny reddish spots; they seldom exceed 120mm in height and display themselves over rather lush variegated supporting leaves which run across the ground, taking root in a wider and wider area when uncontrolled. The leaves of these herb garden plants are similar in shape and appearance to a conventional ivy – hence the name ground ivy. Not only will it reward you with its own prettiness, but will also invite butterflies to flit about the garden.

History

A native of Northern climes, it was certainly used in Saxon times as records exist indicating its usage in clearing ales during the brewing process. Ground Ivy has, over the centuries marched across Europe and Britain yard by yard and is currently invading the United States from the East. Its virtues make it a popular addition to gardens where it is often used as an inhibitor of weeds as its dominance brooks no rivals.

Usage

The plants were fairly widely cultivated as herb garden plants for their apparent detoxification virtues. All portions possess a bitter taste but have a lovely aroma; powdered ground ivy was included in snuff mixtures to relieve headaches and clear sinuses. Before the advent of lead free paint, American house painters cultivated ground ivy as essential herb garden plants – they used them in a tea – called gill tea after the French ‘guiller’(roughly to ferment beer). This tea was thought to be an antidote to inflamed eyes and the common malady of ‘lead colic’ experienced by painters of the time. Gill tea was a specific remedy for hacking coughs and popularly used as a blood tonic.

Cultivation

Although seeds are available, ground ivy propagates very easily from a piece of its squarish root simply pulled off the host plant; no special measures at all are required when taking cuttings from these plants. Although not fussy herb garden plants, ground ivy will thrive in heavy dampish soil with a modicum of sun.

Many people think that growing an herb garden is difficult or complicated, but in fact, it isn’t. Getting the best yield out of your herb garden is as simple as following our herb garden how to tips listed here. One thing to keep in mind when growing an herb garden is to go organic. Organic herb gardens are much healthier than those that are treated with pesticides, especially since most of the herbs that people grow are grown to be ingested in some way.

When planting your herb garden how to get the best yield is often the number one concern of gardeners. But before you start thinking about how much your garden will produce, you need to do a little bit of prep work. So when you are preparing your herb garden, how to plant your herbs is a good place to start. Will you have a container garden or will your garden be planted in the ground? What herbs will you plant? Will you start with live plants from the home center or will you start your herbs from seed? These are all things that need to be considered before you worry about what dish you will make first with your fresh herbs.

As we stated earlier, it is always best to go organic for any plants that you will be ingesting. Pesticides can cause a whole host of harmful effects to people, and children are especially susceptible. Our next herb gardening how to tip is to use organic compost as fertilizer, and natural products and essential oils to control pests. Compost is simple to make from any organic kitchen waste as well as yard waste that you may have in your home. Compost is often called the black gold of organic gardening. Having a compost pile in your yard can be unsightly but you can use a compost bin, which looks better and also makes the vital step of circulating the compost easier. All you need to do is turn the barrel a few times and it mixes everything inside, in a fashion similar to your clothes dryer at home.

Our next herb gardening how to tip is that you need to plant your herbs with their like-minded cousins. Some herbs need more sun than others, and some need more water than others. So you should plan the planting location of your herbs carefully. This isn’t as big of a problem with container gardens, since you are usually only planting one plant per pot. If you are using a large planter that can hold more than one plant, be sure that you plant herbs that require similar conditions together so that you can be sure that all of your herb plants will grow well.

Our final herb gardening how to tip is to be careful with temperature. Particularly in colder climates where frosts and freezes happen you will need to bring your herbs inside during the winter. Many herbs are highly susceptible to temperature changes so if you live in one of these areas, you may want to plant a container garden as it makes bringing your herbs in from the cold much easier.

We hope that you have found these herb gardening how to tips helpful. Happy planting!

Location is one of the most important factors in finding a home for your mini herb garden. What is the best placement to start an herb garden? It is important to choose a location that will promote growth and development to your mini garden while being easy to reach and tend the plants.

Now don’t let your home be a hindrance to your starting a mini herb garden. Some people think that they cannot have one because they live in a high-rise apartment or in a condominium in the city. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can grow a mini herb garden and enjoy the benefits of having one virtually anywhere.

Now, what are the different factors to consider in determining the best placement of your mini herb garden?

First, check the part of your home that allows sunlight in the most during the day. Most herbs love the sun. The sun’s rays are one of the most important elements that will bring growth to your mini herb garden. It is said that there are some herbs that absorb about five hours worth of sunlight. Talk about sunbathing! If your mini herb garden does not receive their minimum requirement of sunlight per day, they will end up fragile, fruitless and sad. There are however a few herbs that prefer less light, so be sure to research each plant to make sure you treat them properly.

Another factor to consider is to put your mini herb garden close-by site. If your garden is within reach it will make it easier to for you to water, prune and tend to your growing herbs. It also lends itself to using them more often. Snipping off a bit to throw into the evening meal is quick and easy if they are right nearby. Frequent light harvests will also stimulate new growth from the plant leading to a stronger more fruitful plant. If the garden is getting in your way in a certain location, consider moving to an alternate site tucked away. But don’t forget it is there or you will never use the produce.

Find out if that spot you have in mind has breeze moving through. A partial amount of light wind is essential in helping your garden grow. Of course, too strong of a breeze can dry out and damage your herbs, so use prudence when settling on this aspect.

A mini herb garden is a great way to bring a little of the outdoors into your home. Just the act of gardening can be a relaxing pastime. This can be accomplished no matter what you current living situation. And being a mini garden lends itself to be mobile should you need it out of the way temporarily or moved to a better spot for growing. Start yours today and have fun.

An Italian herb garden groups the herbs well-known in Italian cuisine together, such as oregano, basil, garlic and sage. Create a taste, smell and vision of Italy by creating your own Italian-themed herb garden. Its easy to do and adds authentic flavor to your Italian dishes.

Basil is useful in many Italian recipes. Not only will basil add flavor to your cooking, but also the basil plant benefits its neighbors in the garden. Planting basil in between peppers and tomatoes will enhance their flavor. Basil also repels flies and mosquitoes”wonderful in a container on the patio for summer evenings. Too much basil is never a bad thing; blend leaves with olive oil for homemade pesto. Fennel seed is used in Italian sausage to enhance the flavor. Oddly, fennel loses its flavor as the plant matures. One way to encourage new growth is to divide and replant this perennial every few years.

Any Italian herb garden needs to have garlic. Plant a garlic clove in virtually any soil and watch it thrive even with little attention. Harvest mature garlic heads in the fall and store them in the refrigerator or freezer. You can pickle garlic or hang to dry, though the individual cloves of hung garlic will send up shoots and want to grow after a time.

The easiest herb to name as Italian is oregano. Oregano is a perennial that likes full sun. Rich soil can dilute the flavor of the leaves. Wait to harvest oregano until after flowering for best flavor. Pinch the flowers to avoid bolting to seed and divide the plant when it grows dry and woody at the center.

Parsley is known today as a garnish, but back in the days before breath mints, parsley was chewed after meals to banish bad breath. Fresh raw parsley was served on a small dish after a meal and this eventually changed to placing the sprig of parsley on the meal plate. Parsley can be difficult to grow but can be directly sown from seed.

Sage leaves add a pungent flavor to meats, salads and sauces. Prune sage plants closely after flowering to encourage flavorful new growth. Sage is unhappy in extreme heat and prefers well-drained soil. Sage works well in containers and will grow indoors in strong light.

European sage leaves flavor dishes from meats to sauces and salads. New leaves are the most flavorful. Pruning encourages new growth and keeps the plant from growing too woody. Harvest sage after blooming. Sagebrush is not the same as sage the herb, though they share similar smells and color.

Italy can come to your garden by planting a few of the herbs famous in their cuisine. Outside of use for their flavor, many Italian herbs are beautiful additions to your landscaping. Consider which herbs you are likely to use and each plants sunlight, soil and water requirements before planting an Italian-themed herb garden. Many more herbs used in Italian cooking are not listed here”with a little research you can explore other herbs you might plant in an Italian herb garden.
