No college degree is needed in herb garden designs. Good websites, like this one, and eBooks are all you need to learn some basic principles that lead to successful herb gardening.

Consideration of some gardening factors is all that is needed.

    1) light,

    2) water,

    3) root space,

    4) dominant herbs, and,

    5) soil type.

Knowing something of these subjects can make a good herb garden design great.

The region in which you live is an important factor. Do not plan a garden with Zone 8 plants in Zone 6; it is a waste of time and effort. Your local nurseries will usually only carry seeds that are suited for your region or zone, so a stop there should help you pick the right plants.

Prior research and planning gives you the knowledge to help your garden provide you with much joy and pleasure. If, however, you are an online shopper of seeds don’t fret if you purchase seeds for the wrong zone. Save these seeds for your indoor container garden where the importance of weather is minimized.

Planning for light is critical, as some herbs can get too much light. Symptoms include browning of leaves. Use nearby landscaping in your garden design to reduce the sun for your sensitive plants. Know how tall your plant will grow and measure the landscaping to ensure proper height.

Don’t forget that your plant needs some sunlight. Avoid landscaping or structures that blocks in sun from reaching the garden. By all means, know your herb and use that knowledge to select the garden location with the best possible amount of sunlight.

Know as much as possible about each herb you plan to plant. Some plants simply do not play well with others, including mint and chives. These wonderful herbs have a tendency to spread quickly and take over your garden.

Perennials have a reputation of spreading quickly. A friend, and fellow herb gardener, taught me to plant my perennials in clay pots and then “plant” the clay pot in the ground of my garden. This keeps the roots from spreading to unwanted locations.

Crowd control is also important, i.e. how many herbs will naturally fit in the space allotted. All gardeners enjoy as much
variety in our garden as possible, but stuffing too many in too small of a space will create more problems than it is worth.

While the amount of sunlight allowed to get through thick foliage can be a problem, the serious issue is the possibility of rust, rot, and mildew forming on your plants. Space your plants appropriately and allow the sun and air to help you maintain a healthy garden.

When combating fungus air movement is king. You don’t want windy conditions but having air movement through your herbs is ideal. To accommodate this and for easy access plant the tallest herbs in the rear with shorter varieties near the front.

My region has relatively strong winds. If you face the same situation then plan your garden using existing landscaping or structures to block the wind. Should this not be possible, then plant shrubs or bushes around your garden to reduce the wind speed.

There are many turmeric herb benefits. This herb belongs to ginger family. It is used in India for thousands of years as an ayurvedic medicine. It is also an important spice in many of the Indian dishes.

Curcumin is a bio flavonoid. This polyphenolic compound used for anti inflammation and anti cancer. Turmeric has 5% of curcumin in it. This gives the medicinal property to turmeric.

Many of the inflammation related diseases like acne, urinary infection and various inflammation that affect internal organs like pancreas etc., which lead to fatality are seen to benefit from turmeric.

It is a good antiseptic agent. It is used to cure burns and bruises. A pinch of turmeric powder is added to a cup of boiled milk and taken before going to bed to get relief from mouth ulcers. Turmeric paste is applied to the forehead before going to bed to recover from acute cold and cough.

Turmeric herb benefits women more than men. Indian women use turmeric as a skin care product. It is cheap and best. It prevents skin rashes and acne. It also prevents unwanted hair growth. Urinary tract infection which is more prone to women is treated with turmeric.

There is no precise dosage of turmeric. However, it is recommended to take on a daily basis 50 mg of extract concentrated to 95% curcumin.

I will recommend you to go in for complete planned natural nutrition supplement. Beware that metabolism of curcumin is very tricky. It should be taken in an enteric coated format to realize the turmeric herb benefits. Visit my website to know more.

Herb grinders, or spice grinders as they’re sometimes called, are highly beneficial to users of herbs for medical purposes. Oftentimes, patients need a quick way to release the drug into their body in order to relieve pain or coerce appetite. Herb grinders provide a quick way to prepare the therapeutic spices for smoking or use in cooking, as they contain two halves with sharp teeth that when turned, effectively grind up the plant material. Herb grinders can also be used in conventional cooking, to break up everyday spices such as Rosemary.

Although all herb grinders are built to do the same job, there are several different types. First off, they come in a variety of forms such as wood, acrylic, metal and even electric. Electric grinders would be the most advantageous to patients with ailments affecting the joints such as arthritis, because they only require the user to press a button rather than using their hands to turn the compartments manually. They also allow for perfect grinding of the plant quickly and efficiently. Metal grinders are generally the most expensive of the types, but for good reason as they are durable and built to withstand repetitive use. Acrylic grinders are the least expensive, but have the advantages of coming in a variety of colors, therefore creating personalization for the user. Some models of grinders even contain two or more compartments with a screen to catch any kief or pollen from the plant, which can be saved for future use.

Other useful products include pollen presses and stash jars. Pollen presses come in handy after collecting quite a bit of pollen, because they allow the user to form it into a more compact structure for a variety of uses. A stash jar is a container with an airtight seal that keeps herbs fresh. This not only ensures that a patient will be getting the most out of the product, therefore relieving their pain effectively, but allows the plant to keep fresher longer, cutting down on costs associated with purchasing it.

Herb grinders can be found in a variety of places, including local smoke shops, kitchen appliance stores, and the most common being through online shopping. Stash jars and pollen presses can also be found in most smoke shops and again, online. Internet retailing or e-tailing, has exploded within the past decade, and many online retailers carry a variety of items for medical marijuana use.

What is the worst case scenario for the bird flu or just how bad could it get? A question I have always wanted the answer to. Well history is always the best teacher and we have an excellent historical teacher from 1918. The answer there is the bird flu of 1918, and that teacher is foreboding. Called the aquatic bird flu that actually started in China (sound familiar) then somehow got into Kansas not Europe. Isn’t that interesting? It started among US Cavalry horses then moved to American troopers assigned to those mounts, stationed in Kansas. These Cavalry soldiers were shipped to the battle fields of Europe to take part in the fighting. Some of those soldiers arrived infected with the virus. This flu circulated throughout the densely packed cities of Europe then made its way back to America and did the same there. In a little over a years time it had run its course and 40 to 50 million people were dead.

In 1918 the big cities like London had a million people. Today our mega cities have 10 plus million people and a very fast transport system. Any new bird flu virus can travel in infected people across the world in a matter of days.

Why can’t modern medicine help us?

Until the bird flu virus of today mutates to its human infecting form, no scientific steps can be taken to create a serum. Only then can science develop the serum and begin to make large batches. This takes considerable amounts of time and fertile chicken eggs and there are not many around. Under optimal conditions modern science takes at least 6 months, minimum. Remember I just said above, it only takes days to move the virus across the world. So even with all the pharmaceutical companies around the world creating this serum only a small part of the world’s population would be protected. I hate to make this sound worse, but the virus can also mutate into other human infecting forms and other serums must be developed.

The Herbal Solution to a Bird Flu Epidemic

You can see how bad it can get and how little modern medicine can do. There has really been little progress since 1918. So what can be done to protect yourself and your family? Here is the answer that has been around for ages. Olive leaf tincture is the answer to bird flu and all other germs and virus infections. But do not take my word for it, here is some of the history of this very powerful herb and what modern science found when they looked at it.

History of Olive Leaf as Herbal Medicine

I personally believe that God was referring to the olive tree in Ezekiel 47:12, God spoke of a tree: “The fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.”

The ancient Egyptians may have been the first to put the olive leaf to practical use. They regarded it as a symbol of heavenly power, and in keeping with that belief, they extracted its oil and used it to mummify their kings. The Egyptians and later cultures also found, and there is documentation, that the olive leaf was a great herbal medicine for the relief of fevers (sounds like viral infections to me).

The knowledge of the medicinal properties of the tree (Olea europaea) date back to the early 1800′s where it was used in liquid form as a very effective treatment for malarial infections. According to the 1854 Pharmaceutical Journal of Provincial Transactions, pages 353 and 354(a), the doctors at that time stated that the properties of the tree, Olea europaea, deserved more extensive investigation.

In the early 1900′s, a bitter compound was found in the leaves of certain olive trees called “Oleuropein.” This compound was determined to be part of the olive tree’s powerful disease resistant structure. In 1962, European researchers recorded that oleuropein had the ability to lower blood pressure in animals, increase blood flow in the coronary arteries, relieve arrhythmias and prevent intestinal muscle spasms. A Dutch researcher found the chemical responsible for olive leafs healing power was elenolic acid which has strong antiviral, bacterial and antiparasitic properties.

Modern Medicine Finds That Olive Leaf is a Powerful Medicine

In the late 60′s and early 70′s, The Upjohn Companies’ test studies were published by The American Society for Microbiology in regards to a new multifunctional monoterpene which they had isolated from various parts of the olive tree. The compound was called calcium elenolate, a crystalline salt form of elenolic acid. When they tested this compound it was found to be virucidal against all viruses for which it was tested. The compound acted effectively at low concentrations without any harmful influence on host cell mechanisms. It was also found to be extremely safe and nontoxic, even at high doses. While it worked extremely well in-vitro, it was unsuccessful in-vitro. When injected into the blood stream, the compound bound quickly to the blood serum protein and rendered itself ineffective. They were unable to overcome this problem and terminated their research. During this same period, other companies had interest in the compound and performed various tests, but also lost interest. Then in 1990, interest was renewed and the process of bringing the remarkable product Olive Leaf Extract to market began.

A safety study on calcium elenolate was laboratory tested with animals and published by The Upjohn Company in 1970. The study concluded that even in doses several hundred times higher than recommended, no toxic or other adverse side effects appeared..

Recent Australian studies show that liquid olive leaf extract made from fresh olive leaves has up to 40 times more antioxidants than even the very best extra virgin olive oils. This same fresh Olive Leaf Extract also has 5 times more antioxidant power than Vitamin C, 28 times more antioxidant power than Noni juices and 6 times more than Goji juices.

    The Power of Olive Leaves

Effective against fever and helpful for nervous tension; great immune booster and viral/bacterial killer. Researchers credit a number of unique properties possessed by the olive leaf compound for the broad killing power: an ability to interfere with critical amino acid production essential for viruses, an ability to contain viral infection and/or spread by inactivating viruses or by preventing virus shedding, budding or assembly at the cell membrane, and the ability to directly penetrate infected cells and stop viral replication in the case of retroviruses. It is able to neutralize the production of reverse transcriptase and protease (an enzyme found in retroviruses that enable the virus to make DNA from viral RNA). These enzymes are essential for a retrovirus, such as HIV, to alter the RNA of a healthy cell. It can stimulate phagocytosis, an immune system response in which immune cells ingest harmful microorganisms and foreign matter.

Summary of conditions for which olive leaf extract acts as a microbial and anti-viral agent

AIDS Amoebiasis Anthrax Athlete’s Foot Bladder Infection Campylobacter Chicken Pox Chlamydia Cholera Common Cold Cold Sore (herpes simplex) Cryptosporidiosis Cytomegalovirus Diarrheal Disease Diphtheria Ear Infection Ebola Sudan Virus E. Coli Epstein-Barr Virus Flu (influenza) Gastric Ulcers (from H. Pylori) Genital Herpes/Warts Giardia Gonorrhea Group B Strep Hantavirus Hepatitis A, B, C Herpes Zoster (shingles) Lyme Disease Malaria Measles Meningitis (bacterial) Meningitis (viral) Mononucleosis Pinworms Pneumonia (bacterial) Pneumonia (viral) Polio Pork Tapeworm Rabies Rheumatic Fever Ringworm Retrovirus infection Roundworm Rotavirus Infection RSV Staphylococcal Food Poisoning Strep Throat Syphilis Tuberculosis Thrush Toxic Shock Syndrome Trichinosis Typhoid Fever Urinary Tract Infections Vaginal Yeast Infections

    Die-Off Syndrome

There are no negative side effects with Olive leaf extract but it does have a healthy side effect called the Herxheimer or “Die-Off” effect. Here is what takes place during a die-off effect. In the body there are microbes or viruses that somehow manage to evade the body’s immune system. Upon exposure to olive leaf tincture these microbes and viruses are destroyed which is a good thing for the person. After the microbe virus death, their cell-wall proteins are absorbed through the weakened mucous membrane, which surrounds them. The body recognizes these as toxins and begins its natural processes to get rid of them. If present in too large of numbers for the eliminative system to handle, the individual may develop symptoms that include headaches, swelling in the mouth, throat, sinuses, and lymphatic’s, rashes, fatigue, diarrhea, muscle/joint achiness, or other flu-like symptoms. The severity will vary from person to person, depending on the extent of their condition, the state of their immune and eliminatory systems, and how much olive leaf extract is being consumed.

The die off effect is desirable as it indicates that the body is being cleared of these hazardous microbes and viruses. Anyone who experiences these unpleasant effects generally feels fabulously well afterwards many times better than ever before.

If you feel the effects and you would like to minimize them, there are some easy things you can do. Many physicians recommend that an individual consume plenty of water in between usages of the product. Water keeps the lymphatic system and the kidneys functioning properly and more capable of handling the excess toxins. Another way to reduce the effects is to cut back on the dose of tincture that you are taking or go off it completely for a day or two before slowly increasing the dose once again. It can take anywhere from a couple of days to a week to completely rid the body of the excess toxins.

    Why Olive Leaf Tincture?

A good question, and the answer makes common sense. Tinctures are made from the ground herb combined with pure grain alcohol. The alcohol acts as a solvent extracting the active healing ingredients out of the herb. The alcohol is then pressed out of the herb, all the valuable active herbal ingredients are now in the alcohol, the herbal pulp is discarded. This process can be done with one or a combination of herbs. In an alcohol tincture form the herb(s) are easily assimilated by the body to immediately begin the healing process such as killing germs or viruses.

    Dosage

There is no official dose for taking olive leaf tincture even though it has been around for thousands of years of use and testing. The most popular amount for a maintenance dose is 2 droppers full twice daily on an empty stomach before meals. For conditions such as the common cold, flu, sinus infections, and basic respiratory tract infections, the dose is 2 droppers full every 2 hours. For acute infections such as sore throat, swollen glands, fever, etc., the recommendation is 3 droppers full every 2 hours.

    Safety of Olive Leaf Tincture

From all indications over the thousands of years of use by professional and nonprofessional people; Olive leaf tincture appears to be an extremely safe supplement that can effectively aid the body in improving immune function and fighting infection by various microbes and viruses. To my knowledge and through my research I have not found one single negative case involving the use of olive leaf tincture.

    Shelf Life

Alcohol acts as a preservative and if stored in a cool, dark place, tinctures can last indefinitely. I have herbal tinctures that have lasted 15 years and were just as strong as when I first used them. As I said above, avoid heat, sunlight, and exposure to air, and your tinctures will keep their “just picked” freshness for as long as you own them.

    Caution:

Don’t take olive leaf with antibiotics as they can be inactivated by olive leaf.

Don’t take olive leaf with Warfarin (Coumadin) this drug can cause internal bleeding.

Olive leaf naturally relaxes blood vessels and capillaries which could increase Coumadin’s side effect.

You do not have to be an expert gardener, or even have ever gardened before to have a beautiful, highly producing herb garden. In fact, you don’t even need a yard. All you need is to follow these steps and get growing!

First, you need to decide what you want to grow. Of course you want to grow herbs you like, whether for cooking, making teas and potions, or just smelling.

Next you want to decide whether to grow your garden inside or out. Many factors determine this, but if you are just starting out, you may want to begin with an indoor garden. It’s easier than starting an outdoor garden from scratch, you don’t have to worry about the weather and all you need is a sunny window space or a counter with good light. Also, you can always get a grow light to help out.

At this point you may decide to start out with a prepackaged herb kit. They come with a great selection of herbs and contain everything you need (including instructions) to grow a beautiful herb garden. Just add water!

If you’re a little more ambitious, you may want to purchase a few starter plants, some pots and potting soil and go from there. Be sure to line the bottom of the pots with some small rocks, and gives the plants some room in the pot to grow. Water the plants well after potting and you have an herb garden.

Most herbs don’t like for their feet to stay wet, so don’t over water. It’s time for a drink when the soil at the top starts feeling just a little moist. Add some liquid fertilizer very three or four waterings, but use a light hand. Also, harvest them often, and cut off any blooms if you want them to keep producing leaves.

Now just wait for the herbs to settle in and start enjoying them. As they grow, it would be great to learn a little more about them. As you learn and enjoy your herbs you can start planning for a bigger garden next spring!

The reason why herb garden kits don’t get any better than a Chia herb garden can be summed up in a few words — simple to start, low maintenance, and a germination time of just four days. And a Chia kit comes packaged with everything you need to grow herbs including seeds, saucers, saucer liners, terra cotta pots, simple-to-read instructions, and sometimes even recipes.

Some time ago Jerry Seinfeld said “I have no plants in my house. They won’t live for me. Some of them don’t even wait to die, they just commit suicide.” If you relate to Jerry, then a Chia herb garden kit may be your answer to having a green thumb.

With the typical Chia kit you get 6 different packets of seeds — from dill and sweet basil to curled parsley, chives, cilantro, and sweet marjoram.

The no mess part of a Chia kit is that you don’t have to contend with mixing dirt, fertilizer, lime, and compost because there is no dirt. Instead, the Chia herb garden uses special sponges composed of tree bark and peat moss as the growing medium.

To start your Chia kit, moisten the sponges and place each sponge in a pot. Sprinkle each seed packet over a sponge. Be sure to place a plant marker in each pot for identification.

As a Chia herb garden loves warm and humid conditions in order to germinate, a trick that works is to cover each pot with a plastic bag. In a few hours you will see condensation on the plastic which means you’ve successively created the desired humidity for your plants.

Once your seeds start sprouting and a couple of leaves appear, you’re ready to take off the plastic bags and place your plants on a sunny windowsill. A western or southern exposure will give your plants about 5 to 6 hours of sunlight per day. Water them regularly and it won’t be long before you enjoy fresh herbs to flavor your favorite dishes with.

When the weather is suitable for bringing your Chia herb garden outdoors, simply take your terra cotta pots to where you want to plant your herbs, turn them upside down and the sponge holding your plants will come out in one piece. Put everything in a large enough hole to accommodate the sponge, pack soil gently around the sponge, water the plants and there you have it — a successful outdoor transplant.

That’s all there is to it and we bet even Jerry Seinfeld would be a success at this.

    Lobelia (and other Cardinal Flowers)

    Lobelia cardinalis

    Campanulaceae (bellflower family), Subfamily Lobeliaceae
    (lobelias)

With its spires of brilliant crimson tubular flowers waving in the breeze, like the flash of a male cardinal in flight, the cardinal flower is aptly named. Hummingbirds and swallowtail butterflies frequently visit these vivid flowers, the most striking blooms of our native lobelias. The name lobelia honors a Flemish physician and herbalist, Mathieu de Lobel (1538-1616). The Latin cardinalis, meaning “principal,” was first extended to describe the principal dignitaries of the Catholic Church and then the distinctive red color that cardinals wear. Applying the same word to a brilliant red bird and flower was only another short step.

Indian red is another common name for this striking perennial, which can grow three feet tall. These plants, with handsome dark green foliage beneath their regal bloom spires, are happy in moist soil, especially around ponds and marshes, yet the species adapts well to normal garden conditions. Lobelia is found growing in the wild from New Brunswick south to Florida and East Texas, and west as far as California.

The genus Lobelia includes about 375 species native to warm, temperate, and tropical regions. Most are native perennials and annuals, extensively cultivated, with distinctive flowers attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds seeking nectar. Several species are noted drug plants today, and Native Americans probably used most of the lobelias throughout their range for healing purposes.

    Traditional uses:

Cherokee and Iroquois Indians used strong teas made from lobelia roots to treat syphilis, typhoid fever, and stomach problems. Many tribal medicine people also used leaf teas from this herb as nerve tonics and to treat cramps. The leaves and blossoms were dried for use in medicinal smoking mixtures to stimulate the heart. The herb was also extensively included in “love medicines” and “love potions” employed by many different tribes. The intense red was held sacred and symbolic of the heart and love.

Indians smoked the dried leaves of the related Indian tobacco, L. inflata, to treat asthma, bronchitis, and sore throat and to enhance the actions of other herbs. This finely hairy native annual blooms with white to pale blue flowers in spires that can reach six to eight inches high and ripen into small, inflated seedpods after summer. Self-sowing, it is widespread across eastern fields and open woods from Nova Scotia to Saskatchewan and south to Georgia, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

Great lobelia, or blue cardinal flower, L. siphilitica, is another related herb long used by Indians for medicinal purposes. Centuries ago, they made herbal root decoctions (strong teas) to treat syphilis, while leaf teas served to treat colds, headaches, and stomach problems. Leaves were poulticed on sores and used as wound dressings and smoked to treat respiratory ailments. The slim, attractive perennial herb, which can top five feet tall, puts forth blue-lavender flowers_tightly clustered along the bloom spire. It favors stream banks and open meadows from Maine to North Carolina and westward into Mississippi, Arkansas, and Minnesota.

As with other lobelia relatives, the leaves, stems, and blossoms of pale-spike lobelia, L. spicata, were dried and smoked to treat respiratory and circulatory problems. Indians also used the whole plant to make medicinal skin washes to treat sores and wounds, and it was drunk as an emetic. This perennial herb with pale blue to whitish flowers grows to almost four feet tall in fields and meadows throughout the region from New Brunswick to Minnesota and southeast to Georgia. Lobelias’ pale blue flowers were believed to have magical properties, such as the ability to ward off ghosts.

    Modern uses:

Contemporary herbalists continue to use lobelias in many of the traditional Native American applications. Upper parts of Indian tobacco, L. inflata, the primary medicinal herb, are used in tinctures, tablets, and infusions. It yields several substances similar to nicotine, which has led herbalists to use lobelia to help patients give up smoking. Lobeline, one of fourteen alkaloids present in L. inflata, goes into commercial antismoking lozenges, chewing gums, and patches. Lobelia is also valued as a respiratory treatment, especially for bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis. It relaxes the muscles of the smaller bronchial tubes, opening the airways and stimulating breathing. Combined with cayenne pepper, lobelia has been used as a chest and sinus rub.

    Cautions:

Lobelias are toxic and can act as strong emetics. Do not use them to self-medicate.

    Growth needs and propagation:

Lobelia thrives in rich, moist soils and full to partial sun. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil and should be mulched in winter, especially in northern areas. The other species of lobelia will tolerate mixed soil types
and dry conditions, and they like full sun. They are remarkably enduring and rugged. All, lobelia included, are hardy plants that flower from midsummer into early fall, when they set seeds. Sow the tiny seeds in humus-rich soil and cover them with a thin layer of mulch. They need to overwinter outdoors for maximum hardiness. Carefully remove the mulch in spring. Plants from seed will usually flower in the second year.

Easy propagation by stem layering and root division is also possible, the latter best done in early spring. Set the roots almost a foot apart with the new buds just at the soil surface. Keep the soil moist. Stem layering is easiest to accomplish in midsummer.

Carefully bend the stem over until it touches the ground. Stake it, cover a portion of the upper stem with a half inch of soil, and keep this moist. New shoots will form and emerge; the stem can be cut between the new shoots in the fall.

    Companions:

Great companion plants are blue flag and sweet flag as well as elderberry shrubs. Angelica and heal-all also go well with lobelias in the garden.

A person who is suffering sleeps on lobelia to learn the cause of his suffering. Put it under your pillow at night and dream about your sickness during the night to discover what is wrong with you. Only the sick person does this and the next morning he will know what medicine to use. – Jemima Gibson, Cayuga herbalist, Six Nations Reserve, Canada, 1914

An inside herb garden, is a rewarding and efficient method to have a steady supply of herbs at your fingertips. The herbal garden is usually placed on a windowsill, preferably facing a south-west direction for maximum sunlight. Most herbs are quite simple to manage and require little intervention of your part. Under good conditions, growing herbs in pots indoor can be considered easier than doing so outdoors.

    Do Herbs Grow Well Indoors?

Yes, herbs will grow and thrive very well inside of your home. They don’t need any more care and time than other plants would and they easily adapt to the environment you choose in your home. Most herbs are sun loving plants but certain varieties are moire inclined to indirect sunlight or shade.

    Advantages:

The biggest advantage on growing an indoor herb garden is certainly the fact that they are not subject to the varying seasons (depending of course of where you live). The big factor to be considered is sunlight.

Once the weather begins to be too cold for outside gardening, plants can be bought indoors in containers and will do fine as long as they get proper light. If natural light is insufficient, you can compensate with grow lights. Signs that the plants lack light are long sterns and leaves, fading leaves or leaves that fall of the plants for no reason.

Of course growing plants inside of the home lets you have fresh leaves all year long and little worry concerning the outside weather. The herbal garden will do particularly well when receiving light from a south or south-west facing window.

If your herbs are used for cooking, you will find it very convenient to have the needed herbs right at your fingertips. Cooking with herbs picked right off the plants does not get any fresher and the full flavored leaves will make all your meals a distinctive delight.

    Disadvantages:

The big concern about indoor herb gardening is the temperature and moisture that this environment provides.

Thought certain plants have a higher tolerance level, many plants can find the indoor environment too dry, especially during winter where the temperature is controlled and the ambient air is shut-in. To help with this situation, place the herb’s pot onto a tray filled with pebbles with water. The time that this water evaporates will add humidity around the plants. You will notice that the trays have to be refilled quite often. Yo0u might also wish to have a ventilator to help circulate the air a bit.

Another problem that may arise with the inside herb garden are pests. Since you are growing herbs in pots inside your home, there is no cold winter air to kill off eggs that may have found their way in the soil surrounding the plants. Tiny insects might appear around the plants. They will either be crawling or flying around your plants. To counter this inconvenience, prepare some lightly soapy water in a large, deep bowl. Tip over the pot containing the plant and swish it a few times in the water. The soap will eliminate the pests with no harm to the plant. Another way is to use this same solution and use a spray bottle to clean the plants. Spray the plants until the soapy solution drips over the leaves. Make sure you spray the undersides of the leaves for this is the most frequent place where the eggs and hatching are usually present.

You can easily grow a inside herb garden all year round in your home or apartment simply by attending at regular intervals to the plants needs. Though there are a few considerations to keep in mind, there are numerous good reasons to growing your own herbs and reap the many rewards that they offer.More good tips and valuable advice can be found on my website as indicated below.

The “blogs” are abuzz with new findings about cinnamon for controlling blood sugar and cholesterol levels in type 2 diabetes, but another herb that may be even better. This is Coccinia cordifolia, which is also known as koval.

Koval plants are in the same family as the better-known bitter melon. They send out vines in every direction in moist summer heat. Unlike bitter melon, koval is harvested for its leaves rather than for its fruit.

Whilst Coccinia cordifolia (koval), grows extensively in India and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, there have been few controlled studies of its efficacy.

Clinical researchers at the St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences in Bangalore prepared a standardized extract from 15 grams of the dried herb. They gave either the extract or a placebo to sixty newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics for a period of 60 days. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the herb Coccinia cordifolia, on the blood sugar levels of type 2 diabetic volunteers who only required dietary or lifestyle changes, but no drugs.

Among the test volunteers who were given the herb rather than a placebo, the average fasting blood sugar level at the beginning of the trial was 132 mg/dL (7.3 mmol/L). The average fasting blood sugar level at the end of the 60 day trial was 111 mg/dL (6.2 mmol/L). It is also interesting to note the average post prandial or after meal blood sugars at the beginning of the trial were 183 mg/dL (10.2 mmol/L) and at the end of the trial, the average post-prandial levels were 150 mg/dL( 8.3 mmol/L).

This trial is good preliminary evidence that Coccinia cordifolia or koval, is actually capable of helping early stage type 2 diabetics get better, although certainly not perfect, control over their blood sugar levels without any additional need for medication or even changes in their diet or level of exercise.

Although this test result does not suggest if you are a type 2 diabetic and your blood sugars have been running 300 mg/dL (16.67 mmol/L) or higher for years, that the herb alone will be enough for you. However, adding koval to your type 2 diabetic treatment program may help lower blood sugar levels and, likely, will not hurt.

Test volunteers on the herb, as well as having improvements in their fasting and post prandial sugar levels, after 90 days had an improvement in their HbA1c percentage compared with the levels of the placebo group.

Starting a herb growing business can be a lot of fun-watching the plants grow, seeing the happiness they can bring customers-but also, it can be very profitable. In addition to these great benefits, the cost of starting an herb business is relatively inexpensive. In fact, you can probably start one for under $500. Here’s how:

First of all, to provide the best growing environment for herb plants, it is recommended you build a mini-greenhouse/raised bed. It’s a good idea to standardize the width at 40 inches, but you can make it any length you want to accommodate the space available in your backyard or growing area. In figuring out placement of your mini-greenhouse/raised bed, make sure you have easy access to it on all sides, which will make watering and caring for it much easier. Also, it needs lots of sunlight. Don’t hide it under a tree or put it in a shady spot.

The cost for a mini-greenhouse/raised bed should be under $300 for a 40 inch by 30 foot bed. Best of all, it should pay for itself fairly quickly. If you’re looking for a more creative raised bed, considering checking out what the Noble Foundation has to offer. They offer many that are made out of such materials as corrugated metal sheeting or recycled tires. They have also created a very simple mini-greenhouse that is 40 inches by 30 feet and can be built for $100!

A raised bed/mini-greenhouse of this size should accommodate about 400 potted plants. Also, it is recommended you use larger pots (such as six-inch pots) as these will generally sell better. A good recipe that will provide enough growing mix for these 400 six-inch pots is as follows:

    8 cubic feet topsoil

    8 cubic feet washed sand

    4 cubic feet perlite

    12 cubic feet peatmoss

Next you’re going to need to purchase the herb seeds. There are many sources online such as Johnny’s Seeds and Richter’s. After you get the seeds, you’re ready to begin growing and on your way to success in the herb business.

After your herb plants have grown and you’re ready to sell your plants, it’s time to purchase the other items that will help you succeed. It’s a good idea to buy sturdy tables to display your potted herbs at a convenient level for your customers. Also, if you plan to sell your plants at a farmer’s market (one of the best ways to sell plants and gain new customers) in addition to the fee for your space, you might need a simple canopy if shade is not available. Other business costs could include flyers, ads in the newspaper, business cards, and more. Get creative! Small expenses could lead to big profits.

Buying the right supplies will lead to success in the herbal business. With under $500 you can get your herb growing business started and you’ll see the profits grow faster than your plants!
