Oregano is a delightful perennial herb with dark green leaves in opposite pairs, and pretty flowers in pink, purple or white in color. Its flavor is very similar to that of Marjoram, but slightly stronger and more pungent.

The Oregano herb is believed to have come from Greece. Its name means “Joy of the Mountain” in Greek, and the herb is indeed found growing wild on the mountainside of Greece and the Mediterranean. Legend has it that the Greeks fed cows with Oregano to improve the taste of the meat, and Aristotle has recommended the herb as an antidote for poison after he noticed that tortoises would eat the herb after swallowing a poisonous snake.

    Growing Oregano

Oregano grows best in warm climate; for the US, it would mean climate zone 5-9. It might be helpful to know that the herb prefers partial shade as its leaves can be scorched by the full sun. This makes Oregano the perfect choice in shady areas under the big tree, or corners in your garden. If you live in an area with lower climate zone, you can still include Oregano in your herb gardening, with extra care: either transplant them to pots and bring indoors before winter, or cover the plants for protection against frost and harsh winds.

    Harvesting Oregano

The Oregano herb is ready for harvest once it reaches 4-5 inches in height. This plant can generally tolerate aggressive harvesting; in fact, frequent pruning can encourage stronger and healthier growth. As a good practice in herb gardening, you can inspect your Oregano for signs of pests during pruning.

Having said that, this herb attracts few pests, except maybe spider mites and aphids if the plant is grown indoors during the winter. If aphids hit, simply spray the plant with insecticidal soap.

    Propagating Oregano

It is easy to propagate your Oregano and this can be done by seeding, cuttings and root division. For seeds, it will be helpful to sow them in containers and cover the seeds with only a light layer of soil. This can be done in spring or when the temperature is above 45F.

Similar to Mint, Oregano sends out runners when mature. Roots grow out from these shoots as soon as they touch the soil… While this means that the herb is very easy to propagate, there is a risk of Oregano overrunning your garden. A solution would be to contain the herb’s growth in a pot (either with or without the bottom removed) and place it deep in the soil, or simply grow Oregano as a container plant.

    Oregano Uses

While the Oregano herb is mostly used in perfume making in the commercial world, it has an important place in Mediterranean cooking. After all, it is affectionately known as the “pizza” herb!

If you decide to use Oregano as a culinary herb, I would recommend Greek Oregano, which has the classic Oregano flavor. Other varieties include the Mexican Oregano (mostly used as an ingredient for chili powders because of its more pungent flavor), and Golden Oregano, a variety with milder flavor and primarily used as ornamental herbs.

Lastly, a couple of tips for your culinary delight: throw in the herbs only towards the end of the cooking, as the Oregano leaves tend to turn bitter under strong heat. Also, please note that unlike most herbs, dried Oregano tastes stronger than its fresh form. Enjoy!

Growing herbs in your garden can be a great way to get fresh herbs for cooking or medicinal purposes. In many cases you can grow them right in with your other flowers, or keep them in containers so that you can bring them inside in the winter months for a bountiful indoor herb garden.

Herbs can be perennials or biennials so you need to plant them with this in mind. You wouldn’t want to put your biennials in the back row knowing that you might have to trample over some perennials to get to them and replant. Since herbs can be decorative as well as useful, pay particular attention to how tall they are and what they look like when they flower so that you can incorporate them into your garden accordingly.

One thing to keep in mind when growing herbs is that they like a sandy, well drained soil that has a neutral PH. An interesting thing to note is that a very fertile soil is not recommended for herbs since this will encourage excess leaf growth which will reduce the flavor of the plant. Organic matter is great for herbs so consider adding some compost or peat moss to your soil.

One interesting thing about herb plants is that most pests tend to avoid them and they are not highly susceptible to diseases either, so a herb garden can be rather easy to maintain.

Harvesting herbs at the right time will insure that you get them when they are their most flavorful and potent. For most herbs this is shortly before the flowers are to bloom (except for mints which are most flavorful when in full bloom). You want to pick the third sunny day in a row and be sure to harvest in the morning right after the dew has evaporated.

While growing herbs outdoors will yield you the most productive plants, you can still have a great indoor herb garden as long as you have a window with plenty of sunlight and good well drained soil. You should put them in a southerly facing window and you might consider supplementing the light with a grow light in the winter months. Be sure your pots allow for plenty of drainage and never leave your herb plants to sit in a saucer of water. When summer comes, consider placing your herbs outdoors so they can flourish.

Whether you are growing herbs outdoors or want an indoor herb garden on your kitchen windowsill, trying your hand at herb gardening can be a fun way to get great plants, enjoy a relaxing hobby and add some spice to your cooking!

Turmeric is the root belonging to turmeric plant grown in India and China. In India, it is used in many of the Ayurvedic preparations since it has many medicinal properties. It is also used as a spice in many of the India dishes. Being a natural herb obviously turmeric use in natural healing is a concluded fact.

It is a substance used for cancer prevention and cure. It has good antioxidant and anti-inflammation potencies in it. The presence of a great bio flavonoid called curcumin makes this herb important from natural healing point of view.

It is used in various antiseptic formulas. It can be applied to cure burns and bruises.

Indian women used turmeric for thousands of years as a skin care product. It is used for removal of acne and skin rashes. There are many ayurvedic skin care products and turmeric is predominantly used in them.

Turmeric use in natural healing includes treatment for cold, cough, mouth ulcers, cure for urinary tract infection etc.

Take a teaspoon of turmeric powder and add a teaspoon of water to make some paste. Apply in the forehead before going to bed for couple of days if you have severe cold and cough. You will find good relief.

By drinking a cup of boiled milk mixed with a tea spoon of turmeric powder for couple of days before going to bed will definitely cure the mouth ulcers.

Turmeric has only 5% curcumin. When you buy any turmeric powder you should ensure that it is concentrated with 95% curcumin to get the health benefits. This is for use as a natural nutrition. However, for kitchen purposes ordinary turmeric powder is sufficient as a spice.

You should also know that the metabolism of curcumin is not easy. Before it reaches the pancreas it is dissolved and do not offer any health benefit. So turmeric use in natural healing has to be done with enteric coated formats. Also I would suggest you to go in for a complete planned nutrition intake to get the synergy of natural healing for many of our life style diseases. Go for Total Balance, a fantastic natural nutrition supplement that has turmeric in it and comes with enteric coated format. You will see that in my website.

It’s harvesting time for your herb garden. Herb garden is fun. It can be a decoration for some, a hobby, a place to relax, for cooking and for harvesting. It has its ups and downs too. One of the good benefits of herb gardening is that in the future of all your hard work and effort, harvest time will come. You should really take good care of your herbs in order for it to harvest and to continue harvesting. The good thing about herbs is that they can produce harvest again and again depending on the type of herb that you use.

The season for harvesting plays a part in its potency. You really have to think about this because this will affect your garden. The best time to harvest is in the morning where it is clear and dry. Herbs are also potent in the early morning where the sun hasn’t reached the essential oils it has.

Use sharp clippers when harvesting herbs and make sure you avoid the stems. If you cut it then it will now grow again. Some herbs will produce more growth for harvest if you don’t cut too low on the stem. A good technique to keep your garden growing is too not harvest several herbs and different types. You can wait for it to seed until next year. These seeds are important to grow your garden. Use a plastic bag to catch the seeds and use it for another set of herbs. This is for your garden to grow thus more harvest.

Ganoderma Lucidum can be an effective cancer herbs to assist conventional treatment.

Modern treatment usually attempt to destroy cancer cells through radio therapy or chemo therapy. However while destroying cancer cells, such treatment also destroys many essential cells beneficial to human body such as

    * Macrophage
    * T-lymphocyte
    * Blood producing cells
    * White Blood Cells and others

Furthermore, chemo therapy leads to lowering of immunity and weakening of body. So, once treatment is discontinued, the remaining cancer cells might multiply back quickly when the body is weak. This may be fatal.

The integral effects from the consumption of Ganoderma cancer herbs together with modern therapy provide promising results. Beside its own anti cancer properties, this herb can also destroy cancer cell together with conventional therapy.

At the same time, it also fights against the unwanted effects of radiation, reducing damage by radio therapy and chemo therapy to essential cells like Macrophage, T-lymphocyte, blood producing cells, White Blood Cells and others.

Ganoderma Lucidum increases the tolerance level to radio therapy and chemo therapy, improves appetite and strengthens immunity. Some terminally ill cancer patient are so weak that they are not able to withstand these therapies.

After the consumption of Ganoderma cancer herbs, their condition improved and they can complete the course of radio therapy and chemo therapy. Many patients with tumors have also significantly improved after taking Ganoderma Lucidum.

Indeed, Ganoderma cancer herbs play an important role in supporting conventional medication for alternative cancer cure. Its effectiveness in controlling cancer is around 40% to 50%. The main components that give Ganoderma Lucidum its strong anti cancer properties are Organic Germanium and Polysaccharides (especially beta glucan).

Another important natural supplement for alternative cancer cure is Bee Propolis. Researchers found that this natural antibiotic can cut down the DNA of cancer cell, preventing it from multiplying. Other beneficial supplements for cancer include Cordyceps Sinensis herbs and Green Tea extract.

Besides taking natural herbs and supplements for cancer, it’s very important to continue with conventional chemo therapy and radio therapy.

    Jell-O diet plan for plants

Even after your plants are up and running, Jell-O can still help keep them healthy, M. Hess says. “In any organic, liquid fertilizer, such as compost tea, I always add Jell-O,” she reveals. Add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Jell-O powder to 1 gallon of fertilizer in a bucket. Mix well and use the mixture immediately to prevent thickening. Pour directly on the soil. Be cause of possible thickening, you don’t want to use a spray bottle with this mixture, M. warns.

Many adventurous gardeners use Jell-O for their houseplants, but M. says it’s just as great at fighting off fungal diseases in outdoor plants. And, she adds, while any flavor will do, lemon’s her top choice, because she thinks the citrusy odor repels some bugs.

    Ingredients and supplies

    Peat pots
    Potting soil
    Seeds
1 package Jell-O powder, any flavor with sugar
Powdered skim milk, in amount equal to Jell-O (optional)
Salt shaker or other sprinkling device
    Newspaper

    Directions
    1. Fill the peat pots with potting soil and place 2 seeds in each pot.
    2. Fill the salt shaker with the Jell-O powder (and powdered skim milk, if desired, for extra calcium) and sprinkle the powder lightly on top. Gently press down the powder and cover lightly with soil.
    3. Moisten the soil and cover it with damp newspaper.
    4. After 4 days, remove the newspaper and keep the seeds in a warm area with temperatures of 55° to 65°F.

NOTE: Should your friends snicker about your plant’s snacking habits, just tell them that it makes sense when you think about what’s in Jell-O, M. says. “the gelatin helps the plant hold water, and the sugar feeds the organisms in the soil.”

When you are thinking about herb garden design, but realise that your yard will only accommodate a very small area for herbs, and yet you are keen to grow a wide variety to complete your herb garden delights, there is a way to maximise your growing space in a small plot. That is by designing a herb spiral.

A herb spiral is simply a way to introduce herbs into your kitchen garden in a small space, with a spiral of bricks or large stones or any ornamental building material which encloses a heap of soil up to two metres wide, and about a metre or so high.

Basically the idea behind this concept is to provide space for as many different herbs as possible in a restricted area. The shape of the spiral and the height differences that you create provides different environments which you could not obtain in a level small space.

Your finished spiral does not have to form a circle but it is neater and easier to work in than an oval shape. After all the idea is that you can easily reach to the centre of the completed spiral for planting, pruning and harvesting. Where you actually site your spiral will be a matter of your own choice, but if you intend to concentrate on culinary herbs then as close as possible to your kitchen is the ideal. Just remember that you will need a bright sunny position.

The materials that you are needing, besides the wall brick or stones, will be small pebbles, pea shingle, course sand, a non peat compost as your growing medium, some fairly thick cardboard or a supply of newspaper, some composted organic material and some ordinary garden soil.

First of all you need to practise drawing a spiral to scale of 1mm= 1cm. Put four dots as points of a diamond 200mm apart on your paper. Inside each dot place another dot 50mm away and then one more dot in the centre, which will of course be a further 50mm inside all the second layer of dots. Now starting at the top dot, draw your spiral by joining the dots keeping your line 50mm apart as you progress round and round. Having practised this on paper you should have no difficulty doing the real outline on the garden plot using cm instead of mm.

Line the outer ring of the spiral with the cardboard or newspapers to stop weeds coming up. Lay out the outer ring to the fourth dot with your building material (two layers if using house bricks) but gradually raising the level to 50cm and infill to quarter height with garden soil. On top of that goes a 10cm layer of the composted organic material topped off with a layer of pebbles, a layer of pea shingle and a layer of course sand. Leaving about 15cm unfilled at the top.

While filling in, continue to place the inner ring of building material as far as the eighth dot gradually raising the level until you are about a metre high. Finally complete the spiral by continuing level, build round to the centre dot and finish infilling as described. You should now have a gently rising spiral of sand which needs to be topped with about 15cm of your growing medium.

As a design refinement you could make a small pond at the outer end of the spiral. Just dig a hole and line it with a suitable waterproof material, creating a swamp area at the outer edges. If you have electric power available you could install a pump in a suitable pond and have a misting spray coming out of the middle of your spiral. You will naturally have to lay the necessary piping before you start laying your spiral, and of course keep the pond topped up with water; but you did not need me to remind you of that.

In most cases people tend to stay at home rather than spend money on rising fuel costs to go out to have a meal at one of their favorite restaurants. But now, there is absolutely no need to go to the restaurant; you can have that famous restaurant dinner in the comfort of your own home with your family for a fraction of the cost. Your own kitchen can be where you serve great food you never imagined you’d be able to cook.

Learn how to prepare one of President Abraham Lincoln’s favorite restaurant recipes.

You may have to go the market to buy some of the required ingredients:

You will need ten boneless pheasant breasts, half a cup of olive oil, one lb. of wild rice (long grain), two carrots that must be chopped, along with rosemary, sage and thyme, and half a cup of chopped dried apricots. You will also require half an onion chopped, pepper and salt to taste and two tablespoons of baked garlic, plus 2 quarts of chicken stock or canned chicken broth.

Remove the tenders and set aside for the stuffing. With the pheasant breasts, slice a pocket for filling with stuffing later.

The rice should be boiled in the chicken stock. Once the liquid absorbs and it becomes soft, add the carrot, apricot, garlic and onion. Continue cooking until all the liquid gets soaked up and the vegetables become soft. Cool this rice mixture in the refrigerator.

Make a paste by pureeing the pheasant tenders in a food processor until it is the consistency of a paste that can be mixed with the rice mix. Once the rice is cooled, thoroughly mix the pureed pheasant tenders with the rice. Now you add pepper and salt to taste and place back in the refrigerator.

Heat your oven to 400 degrees F. Take out the rice mixture and divide evenly into ten round shaped patties. Then fill each pheasant pocket with the rice stuffing/patties. Rub the pheasants top and bottom with some oil and herbs and flavor with pepper and salt. Place the pheasant breasts in a heavy oven-proof roasting pan and cook for around 9-11 minutes. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving on a bed of steamed sautéed spinach.

When to Buy Herb Seeds versus When to Buy Herb Plants

This is often a difficult decision for many Herbanites and understandably so. The economical question is why spend as much for an herb plant as one could spend for the seeds to make 20 – 100 plants.

Let’s address that issue with some practical advice and tips.

One area where seeds make sense is if the herb is a hot weather annual herb such as Cilantro and one uses a great deal of the herb. It may make sense to seed weekly throughout the growing season so there is a constant supply of cilantro. However another option here would be Culantro which is much less work for the herbanite gardener or even Vietnamese Coriander.

Seeds make sense when the herb has a very short life cycle and especially if the herb is “out of its natural climactic zone” such as French Tarragon, Dill in hot, humid climates. Herbs in a hot, humid climate often go to seed rapidly and produce few leaves so a constant supply of new herb plants is necessary. When the herb is set on going to seed, then there is a short period of leaf production and the window of opportunity narrows as the season progresses. It is here that by seeding each week that the Herbanite has a continuous supply of fresh leaves for a longer time period. Herbs that may fall into this classification would be basils, possibly parsley, summer savory, and chervil to name a few.

For traditional perennial herbs such as rosemary, lavender, oregano, sages, thymes etc. one plant, well established, will last for years so the cost of a plant is literally at most pennies, nickel or dime per year depending on the life of the plant. Remember herbs require little or no care at all which precludes the use of fertilizers, insecticide sprays etc. Most herbs are “beneficial weeds” and need to be treated as such.

Seed growing requires the purchase of many seeds and staggered planting or the herbanite ends up with a lot of herbs, same variety, all becoming available at once. If there is not a way to preserve the herbs, or use them as an everlasting, then one must consume or share at once before it dies. Also seeds generally may require the replanting into another container prior to being ready to go outside so there is a handling cost ( read TIME) to get ready to go into the garden.

Generally speaking there is minimal requirements for equipment to grow from seeds and often this can be done by reusing a container that was being used for something else or reusing one of the trays one received from taking home the herbs from HerbFest. As long as there is drainage holes in the bottom, fairly shallow depth (reason for this is no reason to spend money on a growing medium by filling up with much more medium than needed) and use something like saran wrap to create a “hot house” environment to encourage sprouting.

The above can be done in the home, on a window sill, or area where there is sunlight, but be careful not to overheat if left in sun. As the heat warms up the growing medium, the Saran wrap contains the moisture and prevents the drying out of the medium which would kill any new plants.

If one wants to do the propagation outside, and does not have a greenhouse, then find an old storm window and place on a hinged declining frame. The upper edge being approximately 24 inches high declining to a 9 inch height at the front. The reason for the decline is, as the plants emerge, a simple stick can be put at the lower edge to hold the window up for fresh air to enter and for heat control. At night the window is lowered and during the day it is left open for better ventilation and heat reduction.

For most Herbanites the single most important issue is planting too much, too soon, inside. Rather than being able to experiment with 10 varieties of basil the Herbanite gardener ends up with 100 plants of one single variety!! The crush of winter, the anticipation of spring and summer often leads to this natural tendency to forget how many plants, how soon, and how many leaves all come upon the Herbanite at harvesting time.

For me, as one who pays someone to grow literally thousands of herbs, I’ve found it far more fun, economical to buy herb plants at once versus the expense, frustration, and cost of trying to “save money” by buying seeds knowing that severely limits my choices of new and unusual varieties of herbs in my garden. This coming from one who purchases over 10,000 herb plants over a 7 day period annually to resell.

When it comes to choosing herb garden plants, we often classify them in terms of use, for instance for cooking, flavoring and other culinary uses; for scent in cosmetics or in the home; or for medicinal purposes. Then we plant the different types of herbs together, depending on how we plan to use them.

However there are many herbs that have multiple uses, so these categories are not that cut and dried. In addition to use or function, we can classify herbs in terms of their growing habits, or the way they grow. These range from ground covers and creeping herbs to trees. For example pennyroyal, thyme, oregano and sweet marjoram are all ground creeping herbs. Then there are many shrubs and a few trees, the bay (Laurus nobilis) for example. And other herbs that are bulbs, including garlic, onions and the various chives.

On top of this, we also classify herbs in the normal plant categories, as being either:

    * annuals, which are plants that complete their life cycle in a single year,
    * biennials, which are plants that complete their life cycle in two years, usually growing in the first year and flowering in the second, or
    * perennials, that last for longer than two years, often for many years.

We either grow annuals from seed or plant them as larger seedlings. Since they only last a season, there is not much point in planting established plants, unless you want an immediate harvest. Popular annuals include:

    * Chervil, a particularly hardy annual used to flavor savory dishes, and eaten to aid digestion,
    * Coriander, a popular flavoring in Indian and Thai food,
    * Dill, which has fine threadlike leaves and develops umbels of yellow flowers, followed by aromatic seeds that we use for cooking and pickling,
    * Rocket, popular in sandwiches and salads, and
    * Sweet Basil, used for cooking, as well as raw in salads and in pesto, and also for medicinal and antiseptic purposes

    Popular biennial herbs include:

    * Angelica, that will grow more than 6 feet tall, and which is used mainly for cake decoration or to flavor stewed fruit,
    * Borage (Borago officinalis), which if harvested when the leaves are young, is good in salad, although the flowers are probably more popular in salads and drinks,
    * Burdock, which may be used for making beer (the leaves) or for skin and scalp problems (the root),
    * wild Celery which is often used in soups, but also has valuable medicinal properties, and
    * all species of parsley.

    Popular perennial herbs include:

    * Caraway, which grows like carrots, and may be cooked like carrots, although the seeds are more commonly used for flavoring food,
    * the Curry plant, which is a half-hardy perennial with more smell than taste,
    * Echinacea, a hardy, herbaceous perennial that is widely used for medicinal purposes,
    * Fennel, which tastes a bit like dill and produces similar umbel-type flowers, but is a lot more hardy than dill,
    * Horseradish, which is delicious in sauces and good for digestion,
    * Juniper, a scrubby evergreen perennial usually grown for its berries,
    * Lavender, another shrubby evergreen perennial that has multiple uses from flavoring and scent to medicinal uses,
    * Marsh Mallow, that grows in marshy ground (hence its name) and is mostly used for medicinal purposes, and
    * most of the Origanum species, which includes O. Majorana, also known as sweet marjoram, although marjoram is normally planted as an annual.
