I provided, in a recent previous article, instruction on preparing a tincture from your herb garden plants, so if you have carried out those instructions you are ready to learn how you can make your own throat sprays, gargles, mouthwashes and inhalants which can all be made from your tinctures. What better herb garden delight is there than that.

The tincture is the result of extracting the oils – the chemical components of each herb, made by soaking the herb in a mixture of water and alcohol. Because the alcohol acts as a preservative, the tincture is wholesome and usable for at least two years if stored in a cool dark place.

Do not forget that when the tincture is to be used for children or if you prefer not to drink alcohol yourself, heat the potion to nearly boiling so that the alcohol will evaporate away. This will of course leave a higher concentrate of the medicinal content in the potion.

Herbs can be used in many different ways to treat anything from acne to worms but for the purpose of this article we shall concentrate on remedies for treating various respiratory, nose and throat infections by using tinctures of Echinacea, chamomile, cinnamon, golden seal, and hyssop. These can then be used variously as teas, compresses, inhalants, gargles, or like any medicine; a teaspoonful at a time.

To combat a heavy cold or influenza, make up a cup of tea with two teaspoons of Echinacea in a cup of hot water (to remove the alcohol use near boiling water and allow to cool down to drinkable temperature). This may be sweetened with a spoonful of honey. Instead of two spoons of Echinacea use one plus a spoonful of chamomile or even cinnamon as alternative concoctions and see which is most comforting.

For treating sinus problems, catarrh, excess mucus; use teas made individually, or as mixtures, of golden seal, hyssop and cinnamon. Again a spoonful of honey may help the medicine go down. Any of these tinctures (try any combination to find which suits you best ) put into a small bowl filled with boiling water will make a pleasant inhalant. Just cover your head over the bowl with a large towel and breathe in the fumes.

A sore throat can be treated by gargling with a strong tea made from any single one, or mixtures, of these herb tinctures. Just make up a small glassful with water as hot as you can comfortably use and gargle immediately. Again, to remove the alcohol use near boiling water and allow to cool down to a usable temperature. A throat spray can be prepared in the same way. For a freshening mouthwash, make up a small amount of strong just warmed tincture and water mix in a small glass. Thoroughly rinse around your mouth and spit out until all used. Do this three or four times a day while symptoms persist.

Another way to ease a sore throat or blocked nose is by making a hot compress. Use a clean flannel or small towel soaked in and rung out from a strong mixture of herbal tinctures and water as hot as you can bear. Put on your chest, or round your neck, or even wrapped around your face. Feel the heat and breathe the fumes for immediate comfort.

At the end of a busy day put several spoonfuls of a tincture into a hot footbath. This will comfort and refresh your feet, and inhaling the fumes will soothe and relax you helping you to fall into bed for a deep rejuvenating sleep.

When planning the design of your herb garden, you can research what others have done. Dozens of herb garden designs are displayed in books and magazines you can find at garden centers or the library. For productive garden design, you will see some common patterns.

Herb gardens are attractive even when scattered and disorganized, but for efficient harvesting, the productive garden needs a planned design. Walkways, compact-sized planting beds, and planned sun/shade exposure are three commonalities in herb garden designs.

Your garden design should allow you to reach your herbs for easy harvesting. A path or walkway between beds or through a larger garden plot is essential. Gravel, bricks, stones, wood, grass, or flat groundcover such as Irish moss or creeping thyme all make good pathways. Be sure to make your paths wide enough to allow you to reach one plant without bumping into others.

Small planting beds make harvesting easier. Shapes such as circles, small squares and narrow rectangles are ideal designs for reaching all your herbs. Formal gardens often outline these shapes with shrubby herbs such as boxwood, lavender, marigold, or thyme. Productive designs allow you to reach every herb easily from your pathways.

Increase your garden’s productivity by grouping herbs with similar uses in the same small bed. Culinary herbs can be in one bed, medicinal herbs in another, aromatics in another. The same grouping can be used if you plant your herbs in pots rather than beds. The grouping of like with like is the key to the productive herb garden design.

Within categories of herbs, you can group them with similar uses in the same bed or area. Your herb garden design might group medicinal herbs for stomach upset together such as peppermint, lemon verbena, marjoram and basil. You won’t have to hunt through the whole garden to find just what you need.

Herbs are not all the same size and some like more sunlight than others. Taller herbs that enjoy direct sunlight can be planted to block the sunlight from shorter, shade-loving herbs in the same bed. Sunflowers planted on the southern side of sun-shy herbs will soak up the damaging rays and protect the leaves of shadier herbs. Many other taller herbs can be employed for the same trick.

For a full bed of one single herb, such as a field of lavender, you will want to eliminate the possibility of weed growth between your plants as well as creating pathways in between each plant. Commercial lavender growers lay down rows of heavy landscaping cloth and plant evenly spaced rows of lavender within small circles in the cloth. Harvesting and pruning are a cinch! Definitely a productive design. With a little planning and measuring, you can increase the productivity of your herb garden before you plant.

There are many different types of herb garden plants and each herb has its own unique benefit. If you look at them as a whole herb plants supply a wide range of benefits but to make things easy they are grouped into categories for what they are used for. For example you have the culinary herbs which have many different uses in food or cooking. Some culinary herbs have very strong flavor so are used in small quantities such as herbs like basil, sage, savory, thyme and chives. There are herbs that garnish your dishes, parsley usually comes to mind. By the way parsley is edible meaning you can eat parsley it is actually part of the carrot family. In fact parsley was originally placed in a dish at the table and was used as a breath freshener rather then the plate decoration it is used for today. So after a meal help yourself to the parsley if you like.

Another category is the aromatic herbs which have pleasant smelling flowers or foliage. These herbs can be used in linens or clothing to give them a nice scent. Some herbs are dried and used as potpourri to scent the air. Lavender and lemon verbena are good for this. Oils from some aromatic herbs, like rosemary and mint are used to make perfume.

The ornamental herbs are grown and used for their beauty brightly colored flowers. Chicory has beautiful blue flowers and so does Borage. Valerian is sweet smelling and has deep red colored flowers.

Another important category are the medicinal herbs which have been used for hundreds of years mostly in the East and are still very widely used to this day as a natural way to heal the body. In the West herbal healing is well recognized mostly in Latin America. In the US medicinal herbs unfortunately get a bad rap because herbal use conflicts with the medical model and the giant multibillion dollar profit making pharmaceutical industry. Enough said on that point but you get the idea.

Some herbs have a number of purposes. The valerian herb mentioned above for its beauty also is used for medicinal purposes. Its roots are used as a sedative. Mint can be used for adding a mint flavor to cooking or for mint tea and while mint will take over a garden it is effective for protecting a garden against pests.

Naturally herb use is a big subject, way to big to put it all in one article so these are only a few of the purposes for herb garden plants.

Chives, parsley, tarragon and chervil are some examples of herbs that are commonly used for salads, fish and chicken dishes or to a cooked egg by sprinkling those over its top. This may result to a more delicious menu.

The following are the list of fascinating herbs which are mostly used for food seasoning that you can grow in your home herb garden:

Chives, which belong to the onion family, are very simple and easy to grow. You can choose either ordinary chives or garlic chives. You can use them as garnish to your food by chopping their stems. In addition, you can use their pink flowers in your favorite salads.

Parsley is one of the commonly grown herbs in every home herb garden. It is being said that parsley can be grown easily either from seeds or from seedlings. The two types of this, namely: flat-leafed and curly, are great sources of vitamins and minerals. They can be used fresh. Tarragon, which has more sophisticated and subtle flavor than some herbs, is said to be the basic ingredient in any French cuisine. There is a very easy way to start earning money out of your herb garden once you have gained some experience in the herb garden delights of successfully producing your own stock of plants. I have already published articles on how to propagate herbs from seeds and cuttings which you could refer to.

What type of herbs do you grow? The two most popular categories of course are culinary herbs and medicinal herbs. There are purely decorative herbs and even herbs suitable for creating bonsai. So if you have concentrated purely on one category why not now start to put your experience to good use and branch out to the other areas.

O.k. let me stop being coy and admit that the purpose of publishing these articles is to promote my website where I am offering a free mini-course in herb gardening, and an in depth advice ebook. I have decided to offer as a bonus to my ebook another ebook covering in great detail this subject of making money from herb garden plants.

But why wait for that, here is a simple guide just to whet your appetite for a secondary income, or even a full time business venture. First, think of yourself as a customer and remember what herbs you most wanted when you were beginning. Perhaps there was an herb you just could not find at first. If so, imagine if someone else is also searching for it and would love to stumble upon your small business!

Were you keen to grow basil for culinary purposes or maybe tarragon because you thought of creating your own salad dressings? If you grow medicinal herbs, think which ones people would be most likely to buy.

There are many people that grow an aloe vera plant, not because they are herbalists or have any other interest in herb gardening. No, they grow aloe vera in case someone sustains a burn. The sap, from a cut branch of the plant, applied to the burn soothes and aids rapid healing. Believe me, it works! How many women do you know that have a feverfew plant just so they can chew a leaf when a migraine threatens?

How to Market Yourself

Probably the thought of marketing yourself conjures up all sorts of horrors. At first, it would seem like an insurmountable problem; but really it is quite simple. You would first use word of mouth by telling all of your friends and family; just let them know you have started this small business. You do not have to ask them to buy your products; but they will spread the word and it will travel from there.

Second, you could display flyers in local grocery stores who are happy to give display space for this. It is quick and cheap to advertise here. Also you could place a classified advertisement in your local newspaper. These papers are popular and cost very little to advertise in.

Get more adventurous and set up a plants and seedlings stall at your local flea market or boot sale. These are perfect venues because there are always people ready to spend a couple of dollars on something, and your produce could be that spur of the moment purchase. Do not be shy about having some business cards available and make sure everyone who stops to talk to you at your stall receives one.

How to Start Creating Stock

You need to start growing the herbs that you intend to sell. Get them planted in the late winter or early spring. Concentrate on a few herbs to start with and make sure they are in perfect health. After all, you want to give your customers top quality specimens so that they come back next season for more plants; and other items that you have now expanded into; such as packets of seeds, dried herbs, advice leaflets, culinary sauces and seasonings —.
